Titan Usje is the first company in North Macedonia to receive the “Zero Waste to Landfill” – ZWTL Platinum certificate.
Zero Waste to Landfill is a system that implements a series of waste management mechanisms aimed at minimizing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. According to the waste hierarchy and depending on the type of waste, entities that wish to implement this system can apply one or several of the following waste management mechanisms:
- Recycling
• Composting
• Anaerobic digestion
• Reuse
• Waste reduction
• Thermal processing
Entities may manage their waste internally or through licensed companies responsible for waste collection and processing, which in turn are required to report the quantities of waste that have been recycled, reused, or otherwise recovered.
For the implementation of this system, detailed monitoring and documentation of the material flows entering and leaving the processes are required, including the amount of waste generated, its type, and the method of management for each waste category. Once the data on generated waste and the proportion treated through one or more of the mechanisms above are collected, the recovery rate (the percentage of waste diverted from landfill) is calculated.
If the recovery rate is between 90–94%, the entity can obtain a Silver certificate; for 95–99%, a Gold certificate; and for over 99%, a Platinum certificate.
Through the application of co-processing (thermal processing), recycling, and reuse of the waste generated by the plant, Titan Usje achieves a material recovery rate of 99.86%, through both internal reuse and co-processing, as well as cooperation with external recycling companies for the remaining waste.
The implementation of this system promotes the adoption of a circular economy.
